Cleaning & Maintenance

From time to time you will need to clean & maintain your windows & doors to keep them in the best possible condition for as long as possible. Coastal Windows & Doors with the help of our suppliers has put together the following links on how to keep your windows & doors looking their best for years to come.

Frequency of Cleaning

Cleaning required is dependent on the severity of the environment. The following time periods represent a guide only.

‚Äč

Rural / Suburban Environments

The maximum period between cleaning should never be more than six (6) months.

Coastal / Pool / Industrial Environments

More frequent cleaning is necessary here with the maximum period between cleaning being no more than three (3) months.

Extreme Conditions

Under the worst conditions involving heavy grime deposition and atmospheric pollution (e.g. sulphur compounds or salts) monthly cleaning is advisable if deterioration is to be prevented.

Anodised Aluminium

All aluminium surfaces should be kept clean by prompt removal of all dust, dirt, grime and any foreign matter using clean water and a small amount of mild detergent as required. Do not under any circumstances use any abrasive type cleaning agent (Ajax or similar) or any abrasive cleaning material such as steel wool or the like as this will severely damage the anodised surface. Thoroughly wash off any residue of detergent with clean water.

Powder Coated Aluminium

Cleaning is desirable if the fine finish of powder coated aluminium is to be preserved. Deterioration of the coating occurs mainly as a result of grime deposition and attack by moisture, which in a coastal environment contains chlorides and sulphur compounds.

Deposited grime absorbs contaminated moisture like a sponge and holds it against the powder coated surface; this permits the attack to proceed thereby damaging the coating, which cannot be restored without removal.

Maintenance of Glass

All glass surfaces should be kept clean by prompt removal of all dirt. Clean water should be used and in some instances the addition of a small amount of mild detergent would be of some benefit. Thoroughly wash off any detergent residue with clean water. Do not under any circumstances use any form of abrasive cleaner of any type whatsoever, as this may cause damage to the glass. Lightly sponge off any stubborn dirt being careful not to scratch the glass. Frequency of cleaning should be similar to that of the aluminium surfaces.

Windows and Doors

Regular maintenance procedures should include:

  • Cleaning of the track to remove any grit and dirt that has accumulated in the track area. Ensure that any drainage slots have not become blocked.

  • A silicone spray of the track area and the woolpile seals will ensure a free and quiet operation of the sash.

  • Door locks to be checked for satisfactory operation and that they are adjusted properly to suit any settlement that may have occurred in the door after installation. Any loose screws to be tightened.
